Dr. Antima Gupta, senior researcher and PhD student at the Central Drug Research Institute in Lucknow, India was the second Indian recipient of the prestigious UNESCO - L’OREAL For Women in Science Fellowship for her research to make drug screening program easy and convenient for testing new drug molecules to combat drug-resistant tuberculosis. She was presented this prestigious fellowship along with 14 other young women scientists in Paris on March 4th, 2010 at the L’OREAL-UNESCO headquarters in Paris for Women in Science ceremony.
Every year over 1.7 million people die of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide, with more than 20% of the world’s cases only in India. The challenge of eradicating TB has become more difficult by the emergence of drug-resistant forms of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the airborne pathogen responsible for this disease. In the race to find treatment against these resistant forms, there are several obstacles. Major issue is the slow growth rate and highly hazardous nature of drug resistant M. tuberculosis, which makes testing of new chemical entities even more time-consuming, expensive and requires very stringent biosafety conditions.
This fellowship will enable Dr. Antima Gupta to investigate the potential of another species, Mycobacterium aurum, to act as a surrogate model for drug screening. This fast-growing bacterium does not cause human disease, has the similar susceptibility as well as drug resistant mechanism so far known to the existing drugs, which makes it an excellent candidate for testing new treatments for drug-resistant TB by reducing the cost, time and risk of experiments. Her host institution for her research will be the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, Department of Biological Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London, United Kingdom
Created in 1998, the L’OREAL-UNESCO For Women in Science partnership is the fruit of an exemplary collaboration, illustrating the way that the private sector and an intergovernmental institution can pursue joint projects to support women in science, encourage the advancement of knowledge, and enhance development on a global scale.
As a part of this initiative, to encourage talent through the UNESCO-L’ORÉAL International Fellowships, each year, UNESCO and L’OREAL grant 15 international fellowships to young women researchers, allowing them to pursue their research projects as guest scientists in laboratories outside their home countries. With the length of the fellowships being doubled this year, each fellowship will last for a maximum of two years and will now be worth up to $40,000.
Since 1998, 52 L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Award Laureates from 26 countries have been recognized for their careers and 120 International Fellows from 67 countries have been encouraged to pursue their scientific vocations. The program of National Fellowships, already in place in 35 countries, has up to now permitted 340 young women to continue their research. More than 500 women scientists have been distinguished by the Awards or supported in the pursuit of their career since the creation of the L'OREAL-UNESCO partnership.
The L’OREAL UNESCO FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE initiative has been further extended at a national level in over 20 countries across the world. In India, the L’Oreal India For Young Women in Science Scholarships Programme with the support of the Indian National Commission for Co-operation with UNESCO, has been initiated since 2003. This programme provides financial assistance to young women wanting to pursue scientific careers.
